The Art of Flight - A New Standard for Action Sports Films

I watched Brain Farm Digital Cinema's latest snowboard movie the other night after getting out of the Grand Canyon and was blown away. The Art of Flight is an incredlbe film. The production quality, the action, and the sound track are all amazing. The innovative cinematogrpahy gives the film universal appeal beyond the snowboard and extreme sports industry. A new standard has been set.

Into the Wild

It has been a while since I last updated the blog. I have been very busy with lots of back to back adventures and travels: San Diego, Hood River, Lanai, Oahu, Kauai, and now off to the Grand Canyon for a 240 mile, 15 day rafting trip.

Here are a couple photos from my recent trip to the Napali Coast on the north shore of Kauai. I will post some images from the canyon after the trip.

Follow the Light 2011

I was honored to have been chosen as one of the top 5 finalists for the 2011 Follow the Light Foundation grant for emerging surf photographers. The surf industry can be very challenging place for young photographers to find recognition and support. Follow the Light provides a venue to showcase the best of the next generation and continue the spirit of legendary photographer and editor Larry "Flame" Moore. The grant gives five finalists inspiration to continue the faithful pursuit of their dreams and passion.

I never had the opportunity to meet Larry "Flame" Moore, but from all of the stories and images in the commemorative book 30 Years of Flame, he must have been a shinning light in the industry.

Thank you to all of the organizers who make Follow the Light such an amazing event year after year:

My friend Ron Chappel is the artist and director of Aerial Filmworks. Rom shoots with the incredible gyro-stabilized Cineflex V14HD. Check out his new youtube video Origins of the Earth. There are some amazing shots of the lava flow on the Big Island, and waterfalls on Kauai.

Just got back from a trip to the East side of Maui to film for a few upcoming projects. We did'nt find much surf, but had a great time roaming around Kipahulu and Hana. Thanks Dege & Hank for the wonderful hospitality and showing the boys a good time.

2011 Ocean Views Contest

I was really surprised and stoked to hear that I got 6th place in the 2011 Ocean Views Contest. My winning image is of my brother, Forrest, riding a wave at Makena beach just as the sun is rising over the crest of Haleakala.

All of the winning images were published in the Spring/Summer issue of Nature's Best Photography and in Alert Diver Magazine.

New Lens Review: Canon 85mm f1.2 L II

I rarely blog about gear. There are thousands of websites across the internet with every spec and comparison imaginable. This time, however, I feel compelled to share.

I just picked up a Canon 85 f1.2 L II and have been blown away. The lens is damn sharp wide open, and melts the background into a beautiful, soft dreamy blur. As noted in many reviews, the lens is heavy, but I found it to feel very well balanced on my Mark IV. It can bee a little slow to focus, but is very accurate, and the results are worth the wait.

I was skeptical if I would need the 85 as I already have the Canon 70-200 f2.8 IS II and the new Canon 100mm f2.8 IS Macro. It quickly became apparent that there is no comparison. The images this lens puts out are in a league of their own.

The following are a couple portraits I shot of my good freind Kegan Conway with the 85mm f1.2 L II at Makena.

I recently started going through all of my all windsurfing and kiteboarding gear, and found myself in a conundrum: What could I possibly do with all these old sails and kites?

I hate putting non-biodegradable material into the landfill, and given my gear is way past its prime, the re-sale options looked bleak. After a few calls and a little research, I found Sail Bags Maui. Kristine Hoffman started Sail Bags Maui to create a second life for old sails and kites.

The other day I rounded up Kai Lenny & Dean Christener, to shoot some night windsurfing images with the flashes. Just as I finished getting my gear dialed, and Kai and Dean stepped into the water, mother nature decided it was not to be. It went from blowing 20+ to ZERO. Nothing. Nada.

No wind. No action. Time for the backup plan. I convinced Kai to let me pop off a couple portraits of him standing where we normally shoot the action.

Matt Meola Wins Innersection!

Today Matt Meola won $100,000 for the best video part in Taylor Steel's Innersection film.

Elliot Lebboe (aclcinema.com) filmed the majority of Matt's part, and did an amazing job editing and producing his section.

I am stoked to have had the opportunity to work on this project. Matt called me a few months ago asking if I could go on a last minute trip to film at a secret location in Central America. We spent 5 days surfing, filming, sweating, drinking, and swatting mosquitoes in the jungle. It was an epic trip, and we scored a few really solid clips for his video part.
