The swell arrived, the sky was dark, the morning gray, the air brisk, the water cold.

Flash Bang

Thursday, September 16, 2010

I have always found inspiration in the ski and snowboard industry.  Photographers such as Cole Barash, Mattias Fredriksson, and Tim Zimmerman, are a few that I think are absolutely killing it.   I love the way they use strobes to light up action, create drama, and tell a story.

At the end of summer, I set out on a project to create a collection of remote flash images of windsurfing and kiteboarding - inspired directly by the style of the snow industry.  I set up my Profoto B2 kit on rocks, piers, and sand bags. Anything to get the lights as close the action as possible. The environmental conditions are tough: salt spray, sharp lava, rogue waves, and blowing sand are all part of the mix.

The following are a few outtakes from my efforts thus far - I have to keep the best images under wraps for now.  Check out the newest issues of Kiteboarding and Windsport Magazine to see some of the images in print.

The Majestic Plastic Bag

I came across this video about the life cycle of the plastic bag.  This is one species I would love to see go extinct. This short film is creative, inspiring, and depressing.
