Photo Tip: Shoot After Sundown
Sunday, July 11, 2010
Twilight is my favorite time of day to photograph landscapes. Shadows are soft, water is blurred, and colors are vibrant. Look for places with intersting rock formations and reflectons that will add light and color to an image.
Gear Tech:
A good solid tripod is critical for the longer exposures required. I use the Gitzo 3 series (Gitzo GT3531S) and an Arca-Swiss Ball Head (Arca-Swiss Z1). This support combo keeps my camera rock solid even in high winds and rough waves. I often set up my tripod on the waters edge and have the waves wash under the camera. Don't be afraid to get the tripod legs wet! I often find myself soaked from the waist down after shooting an ocean landscape at sunset. Keep a micro- cloth or clean dry t-shrit on hand to keep the lens free of mist and spray.

Hulopoe Bay - Lana'i
Saturday, July 10, 2010
Having grown up on Maui and traveling to exotic destinations such as Tonga, Palau, and Bali, I sometimes find myself taking my surroundings for granted. "Its just another sunset, another dive, another waterfall hike..." Then something amazing happens, and everything is thrown back into perspective.
While snorkeling in the Hulopoe Bay Marine Preserve, I found myself surrounded by hundreds of Hawaiian Spinner Dolphins. The photos speak for themselves. Hawaii really is an epic place to call home.

4th of July Light Show
Monday, July 5, 2010
I journeyed to the summit of Haleakala for 4th of July. It was a crisp, clear, cold night. You could almost feel the light of the stars reflecting of the lava.

Kauai
I just got back from a 5 day trip to the Napali Coast on the north shore of Kauai. Lush green valleys, dramatic peaks, epic rivers, and friendly people make for a great time. Kauai has to be one of the most beautiful islands in the world.
