Malibu Rain

Tuesday, December 21, 2010

On my last day in LA it rained.  Not one to be easily deterred by foul weather, I decided to go for one final standup paddle in Malibu.  What I saw broke my heart. The ocean was filled with globs of plastic stuck in the kelp like dying jellyfish.  Lays, Cheatos, M&Ms, condoms, shopping bags - a sad reflection of modern packaging and consumption gone wrong.

As I paddled across the infamous Paradise cove, I plucked as much plastic as I could find out of the ocean.  I could not get every piece, but at least I felt better for my efforts.  As individuals we can not change the world over night.  However, by doing the right thing every day, no matter how trivial or insignificant it may seem, we can make a difference and inspire others to do the same.

A few images of my catch taken with the trusty Blackberry:
