New Creativity and the Social Art of Photography

Chase Jarvis, one of the most iconic photographers of our time, recently gave an amazing keynote at the PDN Photo Plus Expo in NY. Now really is the best time in the history of the world to be a photographer.

In his speech, Chase talks about the power of sharing information, and how the old days of keeping techniques and knowledge secret have passed. Chase even recalls how he received physical threats when he started his blog and began pushing technical information out to the photo world.

Coming from the surf industry, I have experienced the same type of pushback from the "old boys" in the industry. I have asked questions and gotten replies such as "go figure it out for your self," "I am not going to tell you how that works," or my favorite, "what the hell do you think your doing shooting out here?"

(Note: I have also had wonderful mentors with the exact opposite mentality - Thanks, Jimmy and Pete!)

Digital cameras and the internet have democratized the photography industry. Forums, blogs, live keynotes.... information is everywhere. The days secrecy and bullying are over. Its not about what camera you have, how big your lights are, or where you went to art school. The barriers to entry have fallen, information is free.

Today's world is about creativity.
