Photo Tip: Shoot After Sundown

Sunday, July 11, 2010

Twilight is my favorite time of day to photograph landscapes. Shadows are soft, water is blurred, and colors are vibrant. Look for places with intersting rock formations and reflectons that will add light and color to an image.

Gear Tech:
A good solid tripod is critical for the longer exposures required. I use the Gitzo 3 series (Gitzo GT3531S) and an Arca-Swiss Ball Head (Arca-Swiss Z1). This support combo keeps my camera rock solid even in high winds and rough waves. I often set up my tripod on the waters edge and have the waves wash under the camera. Don't be afraid to get the tripod legs wet! I often find myself soaked from the waist down after shooting an ocean landscape at sunset. Keep a micro- cloth or clean dry t-shrit on hand to keep the lens free of mist and spray.
